This is a fish story, about the one that didn't get away but got let go.
It started on our last day at Dewey Beach. We got up early, packed up and went out for a last walk on the beach.
It was so early that the lifeguards weren't there. This means that dogs and fishermen are there. Dogs seem to just love the beach and the waves and the balls that get thrown for them. They all look happy.
I've never seen anyone actually catch anything on the beach, but I don't go out early much. We know that fish are around, oftentimes in the afternoon you'll see pods of Dolphins frolicking their way up to Lewes. Folks on the ferry to
This time it was different.
Dan was out for a walk and happened upon this fish story.
Usually you pass by the fishers and give them wide berth because you don't want to get tangled up in their lines.
But this time the line was active with the fellow pulling something in
He tugged and pulled and then let it run out again, alternating being pulled into the waves and pulling whatever was on the other end back out.
The red fishing line signals that the end is near.
Finally a wave helped with the work.
By this time a crows of bystanders had collected, cameras in hand.
They all hoped it wasn't a dolphin.
Turns out it was a Dusky Shark.
Who knew there were sharks on this beach! This is about as far north as they'll get.
The crowd wondered if maybe they shouldn't throw the shark back in. Who wants a shark around? A helper rushed over and tied a rope around it's fins.
Then the ruler came out. It was about 4 feet long.
After a brief period of measuring and many more photos he went back into the surf and swam off. Probably that shark won't swim so close again!
