I've got my fingers crossed to bring him luck, and with luck Scott will be graduating from Pace University this May. The family is going to make a major showing for this big even. Grandma, Auntie Leslie, brother Jack plus Dan and myself will be making the trek to New York. He's going to move to Brooklyn and we're hoping to go into the city and see his new place the day after graduation. Let the planning begin!
We'll attend graduation and the next day hop on a train and ride into New York City. The boys and I have been to New York City several times over the years. Dan has traveled there more frequently on business and has acquired a variety of maps and books about the place, but they're all focused on Manhattan. Brooklyn will be new for us.
His apartment will in at the lower end of Prospect Park in Flatbush - an area immortalized in the movie "The Lords of Flatbush" with a very young Sylvester Stallion and Henry Winkler.
This is an affordable area, which means that the rents are merely ridiculous. It is well south of the pretty-darn-gentrified area called Williamsburg, which is across the Williamsburg Bridge from lower Manhattan. Scott has visited his friend who lives there currently, and assures us that he's seen white kids running around in the Prospect Park, which is across the street playing soccer. It can't be that bad if white kids are allowed out to play soccer -- can it?
It turns out that his second cousin Sarah -a dancer and a Pilates instructor- lives on Flatbush Avenue so we hope he'll feel he's at home in this new place.
He's going to focus on taking (and passing) his RN exam so he can turn his BSN degree into something that produces cash. He's signed up for a test review course in June. Yo can't take the RN test until the school notifies Albany, so we're figuring it'll be fall before we know much about a job.
Until that happens he'll be pounding the pavement looking for something!
