Carls Last Trip to Dolly Sods

A recap from the weekend memorial service for Carl Dalkhe.

Claire, Carl's SO planned a wonderful weekend and service.  We stayed in cabins near Dolly Sods in West Virginia Saturday night.

Sunday morning, but not too early, we took about an hours drive up the mountain to the "sods" which are flat bogs atop the mountain.  Vivian, pictured near her motorcycle scouted the route out for us Saturday.  Carl had always wanted to ride on a motorcycle so she carried him, in his attractive scattering urn in her bike bag (the funeral industry has a host of products designed for various scattering options, this one looked a lot like a large oatmeal box but under the lid was a removable lid).

We had some music both live and recorded, heard the email he'd written Vivian after the death of his mother where he said that he wanted to be scattered at Dolly Sods near this very place.  The only request we weren't able to fufill was for some Beaver to be gnawing away at trees nearby.  Then we shared memories of Carl.  If he had a life's moto it was Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess!

Clair scattered him off the rock, making sure not to let his dust blow back into his camera, which was taping the entire event.   In the end we burned the urn and headed home, leaving Carl in a place that he loved.
